By the end of the 31 days, your home will be completely free of all those winter dust bunnies and be sparkly clean for the Spring & Summer to enjoy! We’re super excited about this home makeover challenge and cannot wait to participate in it with you! Good Luck!
Day 1 of 31:
Dust Window Blinds & Wipe Down Window Sills. Let’s begin with the basics, dusting! There is a lot of dusting to cover, so let’s break it down into a few days to tackle those accumulated dust bunnies. Dust the blinds first, then wipe clean the sill to eliminate the fallen dust. Be sure to do all the window blinds and sills in the house today.
Day 2 of 31:
Dust Light Fixtures & Fans. Dust all of the light fixtures, hanging or resting on tables, and ceiling fans. You may need to grab a step stool or ladder to cover the ones at a higher level.
Day 3 of 31:
Vacuum & Dust Living Room Furniture. We decided to put a couple of the more involved household chores during the weekend, to tackle. Let’s start inside. Your living room is probably the most lived-in room in the house. Depending on the type of furniture you have, polish it clean, dust it with a microfiber towel, or use the vacuum with an attachment on it to pick up those crumbs. For heavily worn sofas & chairs, now is the time to arrange them to be steam cleaned.
Day 4 of 31:
Wash Windows Inside & Outside. Now that your window blinds and sills are dirt free, it’s time to focus on the windows. Use a glass cleaner to wipe clean the inside of the windows. For the exterior windows, set up a soapy bucket of water to use with a microfiber cloth to rid the dirt & grime outside. To dry the windows without streaks, use a squeegee. You can pick one up for a couple dollars at a home improvement store. It will work wonders.
Day 5 of 31:
Dust Wall Hangings, Home Accessories, Home Accessories & Mirrors. Dust all of your accessories you have in each room. Look at everything hanging on the walls, including mirrors, frames and other decor. Dust all of the knick knacks on your coffee & side tables. Go room by room to get every single accessory.
Day 6 of 31:
Toss Expired Food From Fridge & Pantry Into Trash. Grab a trash bag and open your fridge. Check ALL the perishable items, especially ones you haven’t used in awhile, for their expiration dates. Toss out any expired foods. Raid the veggie and meat drawers and toss out all food which has turned. Done. This is an easy one. Bonus points if you wipe down the shelves in the fridge! Move onto your pantry and check ALL the non-perishables for expired dates. Get rid of all of them. Save the ones that aren’t expired. Bonus points if you put them back in an organized manner. Group categories together, for example, soups, crackers, canned goods, pastas, supplements, etc.
Day 7 of 31:
Clean Kitchen Appliances & Disposal. Clean all of your kitchen appliances by wiping their surfaces down with soapy water and a microfiber cloth. This includes your refrigerator, dishwasher, oven/range, coffee pot, toaster oven, crock pot (unless you no longer use one, because well, “This is Us”) and blender/mixer. Next, spray down your oven with self cleaner and turn on the self cleaner function. Let the oven work its magic, once done, wipe the inside clean. Run your dishwasher with detergent but without dishes in it. Open the microwave and wipe down the inside. To clean your garbage disposal, toss a sliced lemon, lime or orange down the disposal with some salt and turn it on until the fruit is disposed. Disinfect your sponge for washing dishes, by soaking it with water and microwaving it dry for a few minutes. Or, toss it and start with a fresh sponge.
Day 8 of 31:
Sort Through Junk Drawers. Everyone has a junk drawer or two. Tackle all of them today. First, empty all the contents out. Then, throw out all the odds and ends taking up space. A good rule of thumb is, if you haven’t used it in over a year, you probably don’t need it.
Day 9 of 31:
Patch Wall Knicks & Use Paint for Touch Ups to Cover Scratches & Dings. Normal wear and tear in a home can result in scuff marks on the walls, extra holes in the walls from trying to hang your favorite picture up in just the right spot, dings from when you (gasp) moved in (2 years ago), and maybe some new artwork done on the walls by your marker-loving toddler. Use today to patch those holes up and take some leftover paint to touch up the newly patched walls and cover any marks up.
Day 10 of 31:
Shampoo the Carpet & Throw Rugs. If you’re a DIY’er, tackle today’s task head on. Or, today’s chore may involve making a phone call to a professional to arrange your carpets and throw rugs to be steam cleaned. This should be done at least once a year, depending on how hard you live in your home. If you have pets, think about doing this quarterly.
Day 11 of 31:
Clean the Grout. The task of grout cleaning is not an easy one to DIY, take the recommendation from us, and call a local floor cleaning company to get the job done. There is no need to re-color the grout, a good deep cleaning of it, will return it to it’s original color. Now, would be a good time to reseal the grout. Do this once a year. This is an important chore to stay up on, so when it’s time to sell your home, you’ll have already done this key step into getting your home ready to sell.
Day 12 of 31:
Baseboards! Ah, our number one piece of advice when preparing your home to sell, is tend to the care of your baseboards. Take the time to dust/wipe them down and use extra paint leftover to touch up all the black scuff marks that have appeared over time. Doing this, gives your home’s appearance a crisp & clean look.
Day 13 of 31:
Clean out your closet day! Dive right into this one by taking everything out of the closet. Put each piece back in, ONLY IF, A. it fits and B. you love it. Same goes for clothing, shoes, accessories. Find a worthy cause and donate your unwanted, washed clothes to your favorite organization.
Day 14 of 31:
Get inside your bathroom drawers, medicine cabinets and linen closet. Take a look at ALL of your beauty products, medicines, and toiletries to check the expiration dates. Toss out all old & expired products. Toss out any product you no longer use (think about the rule, if you haven’t used it in over a year, you probably don’t need it).
Day 15 of 31: Stock Up on Frequently Used Products. This includes common toiletries, paper products, like paper towels, tissue paper & toilet paper, batteries, shampoo. bath soap, laundry soap, dishwashing soap, to name a few.
Day 16 of 31: Flip the Bed Mattresses & Switch the Winter Bed Comforter with a Spring Coverlet. Flip & rotate all of the mattresses in your home. Refresh your bedroom and guest rooms by changing out the Winter comforters with a lighter coverlet for the Spring & Summer.
Day 17 of 31: Remove Dead Plants & Add Mulch to your Flower Beds. Plant New Flowers & Foliage. This may take some extra time today but will be worth it when you see your refreshed yard with the new plant growth. Tip: Adding in quality mulch will do wonders for your garden, don’t skimp on the type of mulch you use.
Day 18 of 31: Fertilize the Yard & Plants. After you’re finished pulling the dead plants out, mulching and planting new flowers, don’t forget the important step of fertilizing the plants to help them flourish.
Day 19 of 31: Disinfect all Technology. Do this often, because technology is a haven for germs. Wipe and disinfect your phones, laptop, computer and keyboard, your reading tablets. Take the time to plug everything in and recharge all the batteries so they’re ready to use at full battery next time you pick them up.
Day 20 of 31: Organize Important Family Papers. These tend to pile up in our home. I have a designated folder for all important papers that are a must to keep. Health records, insurance, passports, birth certificates. Another folder for bills that need to be paid, and service contracts. Another folder for instruction manuals to reference when necessary.
Day 21 of 31: Clean Out the Gutters. Grab a ladder and an experienced climber. Clear out all the debris, leaves and twigs that regularly accumulate in the gutters. Spring time equals rain time, once the debris is cleared, the rain will wash the rest of the remnants away. If you have leaves piled up in the gutters, standing water from the rains will remain there, which could create problems for your roof.
Day 22 of 31: Remove Cobwebs From the Exterior of the Home. Grab a duster with a long handle (from Home Depot or Lowes) and swipe all corners and nooks around the perimeter of the exterior of your home. This will grab all the spider webs, dust webs, and mud nests nestled in the nooks and crannies of your home.
Day 23 of 31: Wipe Down Patio Furniture. Take a damp microfiber cloth and wipe down all the outdoor furniture. If its been a long winter, some of the furniture may need to be hosed off with soapy water.
Day 25 of 31: Check Sprinkler Heads & Repair. There is usually one or two sprinkler heads in the yard that are pointed in the wrong direction instead of watering the grass. Turn your sprinklers on and check to be sure the right parts of your yard are being watered. If one is askew, have it repaired.
Day 26 of 31: Replace Burnt Out Lightbulbs with New LED Bulbs. This is also a great time to change over ALL of your light bulbs to LED if you haven’t already done so. This is a huge step in saving energy.
Day 27 of 31: Check Smoke Detectors & Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Did you happen to watch “This is Us” this season? Enough said. Change out the batteries & then test these detectors to make sure they all work properly.
Day 28 of 31: Dust A/C Vents & Clean Out the A/C Drain Pipe. To clean the drain pipe, vacuum the pipe from the outside and pour vinegar down the drain pipe from the inside.
Day 29 of 31: Rest & Relax today. You deserve this! You’ve made it through almost an entire month of house cleaning….go do something that you love to do!
Day 30 of 31: Organize the Garage. Go through with a trash bag and toss out any random, miscellaneous items that made their way to the garage. Our garage is a haven for things we don’t know what to do with so we store them there. If you haven’t used those items and you forgot you even had these things, toss them away. Once your done, sweep and hose off the garage floor.
Day 31 of 31: Vacuum & Clean the Pool & Filters. Get your pool ready for the summer season by giving it a thorough scrub. Fill it with new salt, if you have a salt water pool. Change out the pool filters to have a fresh start for your upcoming swimming season!
